Schwarm journal

Writing texts – theoretical texts in particular – is different from other kinds of work happening in an art school. While artworks and design objects can be exhibited easily at exhibitions like Rundgang, the journal Schwarm confronts the difficulty to give members of the university an insight into the textual works of the students at HfG.

Working on texts is often considered to be something that happens in solitude and seclusion in the library or in one's own home.To counter this impression, Schwarm highlights the collective aspects of writing – conversations and research that precede a text and fruitful discussions that follow its completion.

The publication is released every semester. It opens up a space for a collaborative writing experience at HfG and presents itself as a platform for writing, discussing and disseminating student texts.

All students of HfG are invited to take part in this collective project in the editorial board or by contributing their own texts

Online-Journal UMBAU

Artistic research, design, art studies and media philosophy are created at the HfG Karlsruhe in changing constellations of participating actors.

The online journal UMBAU now makes this polyphonic dialog between teachers, students and guests, which extends far beyond the walls of the building, accessible to an international audience.

With biweekly contributions, UMBAU presents contemporary projects from the fields of art, design and theory, which are framed in annually changing editorial themes.

After the first two issues with the overarching themes "Political Bodies" and "Fragile Futures", **the current and third issue Chaining will examine the chains with which our world is interwoven and forge new connections. It will abandon the hierarchy of the vertically hanging chain and explore its flexibility, its ability to form new networks, and question an overtly linear narrative and mode of research. We will explore the intricate connections between desire, power structures and the metaphorical material of chains and unravel their historical and contemporary realities.

In regular open calls, completed contributions or suggestions for potential contributions can also be sent to us via email umbau-journal(at)hfg-karlsruhe.de.

Exclusive contributions from scientists, artists, philosophers, designers and choreographers from the HfG Karlsruhe network can now be found at umbau.hfg-karlsruhe.de.
